I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 which has the SigmaTel C-Major Audio device.

The Vista 5365 installer doesn’t have the drivers included but Windows Update includes a version. This version will install and work fine with the internal laptop speakers.
However, when you plug headphones or speakers in – they don’t work!
Downloading and installing the latest Audio drivers for Windows XP from the Dell support site will fix the problem though.

Thanks for this tidbit. I was in the process of installing the drivers from dell when I found this page. I was getting frustrated on the whole issue of no sound from the headphone jack.
My hero!
Hi, thanks for that!, I am running an Inspiron 9300 and Vista…and had the same problem.
Hey, thank you!! Works pefectly!Have a nice day and God bless you man.
seems to be a common problem across any dell system with sigmatel
Thanks a million man.You solved my problem.
You are the man! I had the same issue. Thanks a bunch!
I get an "error while unzipping code (40)" while setting up that driver. Could you please help!!!!
Nice find. I had to uninstall Vista from my machine because of this problem. I am about to install it again.
Im using RC1 and when i install the dell drivers they seem to install but still no base nor headphones.. anyone else had this prob?Installing the dell drivers fixed the issue on build 5472 but im having problems with build 5600 which is Release candidate 1 public beta
i cant get it to work! its driving me crazy.im on an xps gen 2, anyone who could help me, pls do.
It worked on XPS M170 Laptop and build 5600 – I’m at a DJ job- and i was starting to get nervous – i dunno why i didn’t check before – so i stole some wireless found the soulution and is playing right now! Thanks!
Thanks a nunch man, my dell latitude D610 stopped playing sound from headphones but worked fine with internal speakers.Installed the latest sigmatel drivers from site and voila..it worked! Thanks again!
Thankyou very much man… you have saved my life!!!
Okay, Sound card working, midi out okay, running Dell 1100 w/xp sp2 installed. No sound at outputs, drivers there but show not started, trouble shoot and you can get sound if played via-midi, shows microsoft synth as one of the drivers but i don’t think that is needed and either way, i want the sigmatel to carry the audio via drivers out. Driving me nuts loading new drivers does not work, tried everything. But I think that if I can disable the microsoft synth drivers it may allow the sigmatel to take over….email me to : cajunnsc2006@yahoo.com or trainspoter@aol.comThanksGib
I’ve just tried this on my Inspiron 6000 with the released (MSDN) version of Vista, but I still get no sound from the speaker/headphone jack. Anyone had any luck with this configuration?
OK, I got the headphones working by deleting the driver and allowing it to be reloaded via Windows update (though it still seems to be the same driver?)My problem now is that it does not recognize the microphone. Anyone else had this problem?
OK, this is driving me mad too!I’ve got 9300, it worked perfectly when I installed XP Home gen edition (comes with the laptop). But now after installed XP Professional, even after I’ve got the latest driver (which is downloaded yesterday) I still can’t hear the fx sound effect in Final Fantasy VII – the MIDI is working fine in the game tho.Does anyone have any ideas why is this happening?
Thank you soooo, sooo much – I wondered what the hell was going wrong and ended up shoving a hoover over the jacks! This morning I even blamed the sound guy at school for messing up the speakers when I gave a presentation!
Thank ‘all things electronic’ for people like you who share your info & computing successes with the ‘net. I had no idea why my new speakers wouldn’t work automatically in the headphone port of my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Is there a reason why the drivers aren’t already loaded?
Yes! Excellent and most helpful! But remember: this doesn’t self-install. Once it’s downloaded, go into the C/Dell/Drivers/R99254, and click on Setup Application. Let the setup occur, and the reboot too.
HELP I have the opposite problem! I never had any trouble with my computer speakers or headphones, but suddenly after listening for a while on headset I cant get speakers to play any more– what should I do?Thanks,Julia
thankyou so much. that saved me alot of frustration it was really healpful
thanks man im just pissed i had to hear this from you and not dell
what a really really really crap but if advise, download the drivers from dell, wow id never have thought of that ffs.If this is the level of your knowledge then you shouldn’t have a fecking laptop!
It still does not work Alex. I also have a Inspiron 9300. I am very very surprised that MS did not get this one right from the start.
Same problem with my XPS M170 – found this article but the driver wouldn’t install for me http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=vista&thread.id=6860. What worked was completely uninstalling the sound driver and removing its software (when prompted); rebooting; and let found new hardware find the driver again. Now my speakers have sound.
Cheryl,Your solution worked for me… Dell XPS Gen 2 – upgraded to Vista. Sound played on speaker, but not with headphones. Installed driver as stated on top of this site (also updated with Windows Update) however, still no headphone sound.By uninstalling, deleting and rebooting, then allowing Vista to find/reinstall I now have both speaker and headphone sound.Thanks.
My gateway e100m has the Sigmatel as well. No sound from the speakers, but did get sound from headphone jack. I updated to gateway’s vista driver and no luck. I needed to upgrade the BIOS as well and now SOUND!!! cool
I also have the Inspiron 6000 and it’s not working for me either. I downloaded then opened the file and installed . . but no change! Help!!!!!
Cheers, i reformatted my PC but it didnt have sound, didnt think of using the drivers.
I have been using my Dell Inspiron 1100 for three years. Right in the middle of a movie the sound stopped. Thanks to you I have my sound back!Your a life saver!Thanxp.s. If you have a dell inspiron 1100 like me, click the dell support site link. Then pick out your computer and click audio, and install that driver.
I installed Vista on my 1 year old Inspiron 9300. Tried watching a DVD on a plane for the first time. No sound through the headphones (good thing it’s got subtitles). Don’t know if the headphone jack worked before I got Vista. Cannot remember using it. Tried the re-install. In my case, I am out of luck for now.
I had soo much trouble!! but after reading Colin’s and Cheryl’s i got it. Do what they did it should work!!
Dave’s post on Feb 22 works great!I had an Inspiron 6000 and it has no sound on headphone after it is updated to Vista. I believe most other models can work under Dave’s uninstall approach.1. Uninstall: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager. Expand "Sound…", right click "SigmaTel…" and select "Uninstall". Remember to check "Delete…" before click "OK". Once done, reboot your computer.2. Install: Vista will now ask for installing the new audio driver, select the top choice to install, and then "no disk", and "browse for driver". Select "C:\dell\drivers\R99254" (if you don’t have it, you need to download the file through the link on top of this thread and unpack it to your computer). And now you can let Vista to finish the work.Hope this works for everyone!
I have a acer aspire 3690 and just installed vista untimate. no sound comes from my laptop speakers or my headphones,
Had no sound/hearphones etc, run sigmatel so disabled this then loaded updated drivers 9539591R from gateway web site, window came up to check a boxthat i would not copy sound and Ianabled sigmatel again and all sound working perfect also have rebooted several tuimes to make sure it is still ok,hope this helps someone

Hi, I also have an Inspiron 6000, procedure didn’t work, I can’t hear anything through headphones
I have Windows Vista Business version.
Thanks a bunch! This thread just saved me money! I thought something was wrong with my speakers or I needed to upgrade something on my laptop. Thanks Dave and William! I, too, have a Inspiron 6000 and just downloading the driver didn’t help. I had to uninstall and delete and let Vista reinstall. This was a life saver! I was so frustrated and now I feel relieved. Thanks again!
Thanks so much William. The post from April 15, 2007 works like a charm!!!

I think a problem exists with the internal speakers on my Dell Inspiron 700m. There’s no sound coming out of the laptop speakers but, sounds can be heard from headsets after plugging it into the jack. Can you help me determine what the problem is?
I had a similar problem with my Inspiron 6000 with the sound not working. Now I’m being told there is no audio device even though I haven’t uninstalled it? Anyone have any idea as to why it’s dissappeared?
Please, please help me. I accidentally clicked “disable” in the playback devices menu for my speakers, and now I can’t use them. Is there any way to re-enable them in Vista after disabling them?

Hi there,
I don’t exactly have a dell laptop..though maybe you could still help me with my problem. My laptop is IBM-ThinkPad just bought it last year. I recently rebooted it, though now my sound in my laptop doesn’t work. I go to control panel under the sounds and devices area though everything is in gray making it not possible for me to click on anything.
I really need my sound to work.
I hope you could assist me in doing so.
Thanks!
-Akanksha
THANKS! My speakers worked fine for two years then suddenly went out. None of the windows troubleshooter options help or showed a conflict. This new driver worked after I installed it twice.
As with so many others above, you saved me! Whalah, my problem is solved – thank you so very much for making my day and for helping me fix this problem so quickly.

I have a Latitude D610 that installing the drivers from dell’s site didn’t fix the issue of no sound through headphone jack. If anybody has a working solution for that please post here.
Just to follow up my question for those who may be looking for the solution. If you uninstall the driver for the sound card and check the option to uninstall the software too then have the system check windows update for drivers for it (Search the internet) It installs a set of drivers that works.
Hi, I got Dell Dim 4600 Desktop,But i hav’t find Window Vista Audio Driver. Can u plz help me!

It worked!. Great solution man. Many thanks from Queretaro, Mx.
Please help! After installing a chess game on my computer from the cd, all users became slow when trying to open internet explorer 7.0 and outlook express! It takes forever for the page to load, I uninstalled the game but now only 1 user works fine the others are still slow. I don’t really want to reinstall windows is there any other option? and I don’t understand why the game I installed from the cd is making the other programs run slow.
