Vista Fix: No sound through speakers on Dell laptop

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 which has the SigmaTel C-Major Audio device.

SigmaTel C-Major Audio Device

The Vista 5365 installer doesn’t have the drivers included but Windows Update includes a version. This version will install and work fine with the internal laptop speakers.

However, when you plug headphones or speakers in – they don’t work!

Downloading and installing the latest Audio drivers for Windows XP from the Dell support site will fix the problem though.

Thanks for this tidbit. I was in the process of installing the drivers from dell when I found this page. I was getting frustrated on the whole issue of no sound from the headphone jack.

Okay, Sound card working, midi out okay, running Dell 1100 w/xp sp2 installed. No sound at outputs, drivers there but show not started, trouble shoot and you can get sound if played via-midi, shows microsoft synth as one of the drivers but i don’t think that is needed and either way, i want the sigmatel to carry the audio via drivers out. Driving me nuts loading new drivers does not work, tried everything. But I think that if I can disable the microsoft synth drivers it may allow the sigmatel to take over….email me to : cajunnsc2006@yahoo.com or trainspoter@aol.comThanksGib

I’ve just tried this on my Inspiron 6000 with the released (MSDN) version of Vista, but I still get no sound from the speaker/headphone jack. Anyone had any luck with this configuration?

OK, I got the headphones working by deleting the driver and allowing it to be reloaded via Windows update (though it still seems to be the same driver?)My problem now is that it does not recognize the microphone. Anyone else had this problem?

OK, this is driving me mad too!I’ve got 9300, it worked perfectly when I installed XP Home gen edition (comes with the laptop). But now after installed XP Professional, even after I’ve got the latest driver (which is downloaded yesterday) I still can’t hear the fx sound effect in Final Fantasy VII – the MIDI is working fine in the game tho.Does anyone have any ideas why is this happening?

Thank ‘all things electronic’ for people like you who share your info & computing successes with the ‘net. I had no idea why my new speakers wouldn’t work automatically in the headphone port of my Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop. Is there a reason why the drivers aren’t already loaded?

Yes! Excellent and most helpful! But remember: this doesn’t self-install. Once it’s downloaded, go into the C/Dell/Drivers/R99254, and click on Setup Application. Let the setup occur, and the reboot too.

Same problem with my XPS M170 – found this article but the driver wouldn’t install for me http://www.dellcommunity.com/supportforums/board/message?board.id=vista&thread.id=6860. What worked was completely uninstalling the sound driver and removing its software (when prompted); rebooting; and let found new hardware find the driver again. Now my speakers have sound.

Cheryl,Your solution worked for me… Dell XPS Gen 2 – upgraded to Vista. Sound played on speaker, but not with headphones. Installed driver as stated on top of this site (also updated with Windows Update) however, still no headphone sound.By uninstalling, deleting and rebooting, then allowing Vista to find/reinstall I now have both speaker and headphone sound.Thanks.

I installed Vista on my 1 year old Inspiron 9300. Tried watching a DVD on a plane for the first time. No sound through the headphones (good thing it’s got subtitles). Don’t know if the headphone jack worked before I got Vista. Cannot remember using it. Tried the re-install. In my case, I am out of luck for now.

Dave’s post on Feb 22 works great!I had an Inspiron 6000 and it has no sound on headphone after it is updated to Vista. I believe most other models can work under Dave’s uninstall approach.1. Uninstall: Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Device Manager. Expand "Sound…", right click "SigmaTel…" and select "Uninstall". Remember to check "Delete…" before click "OK". Once done, reboot your computer.2. Install: Vista will now ask for installing the new audio driver, select the top choice to install, and then "no disk", and "browse for driver". Select "C:\dell\drivers\R99254" (if you don’t have it, you need to download the file through the link on top of this thread and unpack it to your computer). And now you can let Vista to finish the work.Hope this works for everyone!

    Hi there,

I don’t exactly have a dell laptop..though maybe you could still help me with my problem. My laptop is IBM-ThinkPad just bought it last year. I recently rebooted it, though now my sound in my laptop doesn’t work. I go to control panel under the sounds and devices area though everything is in gray making it not possible for me to click on anything.
I really need my sound to work.
I hope you could assist me in doing so.
    Thanks!

Just to follow up my question for those who may be looking for the solution. If you uninstall the driver for the sound card and check the option to uninstall the software too then have the system check windows update for drivers for it (Search the internet) It installs a set of drivers that works.
